Welcoming spring: creative ideas for the lighter, warmer months

Spring always feels like a quiet, slow beginning before the busyness of Easter and summertime. Finding comfort in the first signs of change, like longer days, brighter mornings, and blossom appearing, helps to feel energy gradually returning after the slower pace of winter. With the gentle unfolding comes the urge to refresh, create and reconnect with the moments that bring joy.

Here are a few simple ways to embrace creativity and mindfulness during the months ahead.

Start something new

Spring is the perfect time to try something different and experience a new beginning.

Whether learning a new skill, picking up and old hobby again, or allowing yourself to explore ideas that have been quietly waiting. It doesn’t need to lead to a finished product, just a process that feels grounding and rewarding. This could be something creative like sketching, journaling or printmaking, or something simple such as exploring a new place, reading a new genre, or starting a small daily habit.

If you’ve been thinking about trying something new, this season is a gentle invitation to begin.

A good way to do this is to create a mini bingo card for the month, this can be a simple three by three grid which you fill each box with a different thing you want to try. This can be really small like light a candle, to something bigger like visiting a new place you’ve never been to before.

Here is mine for March below, to give you some ideas, and I have a free template that you can download here.

Take time outside

As the weather softens there is the possibility of activities outdoors again, which after so so many rainy days, I am really looking forward to this.

Sketching in a park, journaling in a garden, exercise in the park, or just taking notice of your surroundings as you travel to work can be nice in and of itself as well as sparking new ideas.

Even a short walk can bring inspiration through different colours, textures, shapes and small details that may usually go unnoticed, and inspire a new poem, drawing or song. I really take inspiration from Spring in my art practice and take so many pictures of the blossoming flowers as reference photos, as well as sitting outside with my sketchbook and trying to capture them all (impossible, but worth a try!).

Refresh your creative space

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be limited to the dreaded cupboards and drawers. Tidying and reorganising your creative area can make it feel welcoming again and help you to reconnect with skills you may have left behind.

You may want to:

  • Rearrange your workspace – change can be inspiring and bring a different perspective that feels inviting again

  • Sort through supplies – you could brighten up someone else’s day by donating or gifting things you no longer need

  • Create a small inspiration corner or mood board – this can help you stay on track of goals, and remind you to make time to do the things you love (if you’ve made a March bingo card, what a perfect place for it).

A refreshed environment brings renewed motivation and new ideas, try it for yourself!

Return to journaling or reflection

This time of year is ideal for checking in with yourself. Journalling can give space to reflect on the past few months, record ideas or capture daily thoughts.

A few lines a day, sketches, lists, or even creative entries such as pressing flowers or using watercolour. These entries allow time for mindfulness and clam, and over time become a record of growth to look back on. And this doesn’t require anything fancy a scrap of paper, the back of a cereal box, it doesn’t need a pristine notebook, just a pen and something you can scribble on.

Notice the small things

Spring doesn’t have to involve big projects or major change. Sometimes mindfulness and new beginnings can come mentally, from slowing down and appreciating simple moments.

March is perfect for noticing the warmth of sunlight, birdsong, or the bright colours appearing in gardens. Small observations like these often become the foundation for happy emotions and creative ideas, helping you to reconnect with curiosity and presence within the fast pace of life. So sit down with a cuppa and stare out the window for a moment or too. Its rather quite nice!

Allow ideas to come gradually

The most important reminder for this season is that growth takes time and cannot be forced.

Just as nature doesn’t bloom overnight, creative ideas, goals and new habits need space to develop, change, and grow stronger. Not everything needs immediate action or quick completion, taking time removes the stress of everyday life, and helps you to feel calm. This is something I have to remind myself of over and over again, but this year I think it is starting to really sink in.

Spring is the perfect example of patience, just like flowers blooming, leaves growing and lambs appearing, trust that progress is happening, even when not immediately visible. In past I’ve had so many worries of what if I am not doing enough? But in January I had a few unexpected events that meant I just couldn’t do as much as I strive to do. And this has then made realise that actually it is okay to rest, to do a little bit less and that it is all okay without needing to go full speed all the time, and that actually I’m happier too!

Looking ahead

Warmer months bring opportunities for new experiences and creativity in many forms.

Whether starting something new, revisiting an old passion, or enjoying those simple moments, there is no ‘right’ way to embrace Spring. Every small step leads to something. As this month unfolds, I look forward to sharing new work, ideas, and opportunities.
