The Mossy Story
Art and Energy’s The Mossy Story, written by Micha Colombo,
illustration and graphic design by Devon Tipping
About the book:
Meet Jay, when his class is learning about climate change, Jay imagines a carbon giant instead. Little does he know that this daydream is the start of a very big, very small adventure into the magical world of moss.
Join Jay as he travels with his Nana on an unforgettable journey, featuring dancing tardigrades, sleeping giants and the small things we can all do to build a brighter, greener future.

The design process
Creative workshop
Art and Energy ran a creative workshop with University of Plymouth students, to illustrate a book in a day. Quite the challenge, the students used a range of materials to bring The Mossy Story to life. These drawings where then scanned and incorporated into the final design.
Illustration
Devon Tipping and Mikayla Schuler illustrated key spreads within the story to bring it to life and add a visual cohesiveness to the narrative.
Graphic design
Devon Tipping brought all of the illustrations and images from the workshops and used their graphic design background to design a beautiful cohesive book that tells the story of Jay and the carbon giant in a visually engaging way that can capture children’s attention. This is while making sure the design abides by the strict sustainability principles and ethos of the project. Devon utilises eco-design principles, such as thinking about the use of black and white tones and percentages of ink, to minimise the carbon used in the printing itself.
