Print in action artist in residence

A three month residency with RAMP Real Ideas, within Ocean Studios, Plymouth.

Mediums.

Across the three months I focused on expanding my print-making skills experimenting with reduction lino-printing, and then quickly becoming obsessed with mono-printing using screen-printing methods - an entirely new medium for my creative practice.

I focused on fluidity, movement and texture - playing with the consistency of the paint, with different papers and fabrics. Using recycled and found materials to create expressive ways of dragging the paint across the screen to create vibrant abstract shapes and textures.

This was an exercise in using tactic and embodied feedback to create the final outcomes, being led by the process itself, rather than sticking to a pre-conceived idea of what it should look like. Embracing the chance processes of mono-printing and bringing it to a medium like screen-printing which is traditionally about fine exact replicable detail, was a lovely way to subvert the expected. Traditional and commercial screen-printing is about being able to print identical runs of prints and t-shirts, but for my outcomes each is unique and unreplicable, while using the same processes of traditional screen-printing.

Themes.

Thematically I focused on ideas of nature and the environment, exploring the idea of what wisdom do natural spaces teach us, what are they trying to tell us?

This resulted in three outcomes

  1. I looking to the moon and found wisdom (2024) variable edition of 10

This aims to capture the night sky and the sense of movement of space, meteors and stars moving across the sky. A place of contemplation of our place within the world.

  2. What impossible vibrant life can we lead (2024) variable edition of 10

This mimics the rivers, representing the ever-flow of water, the changing reflections and they ability to look at something anew. The river asks of us: We are living in times where impossible things happen. What impossibly vibrant life can we live?

  3. Mono-prints of nature (2024) a series of 9

Inspired by the near-by natural landscape I created nine mono-prints that captured the colours and vibrancy of the flowers and landscapes of the South West Coastal path and the Plymouth Sound.
